Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Engr Dr M.C. Arimanwa, has been lauded for effectively implementing the 35% affirmative action for women. This commendation was given by Mr Chris Onyemenonu, the Deputy Rector (Academic) of the institution, at the just concluded FEPNOWA week held at the 1000 capacity auditorium.
The Deputy Rector, while declaring the Women’s week open on behalf of the Rector, also observed that there was an effective women representation at the council level of the polytechnic. He equally revealed that the Rector was passionate about women in the area of appointments hence their occupation of many sensitive positions in the polytechnic.
He therefore charged women to replicate the trust of the Rector by being role models in the polytechnic. It will be recalled that Nigeria as a member of the United Nations signed and ratified various international instruments, treaties and conventions without reservation. These instruments have emphasized that member nations put in place machinery to eliminate all forms of gender discrimination and inequality. Further, Nigeria’s National Gender Policy as formulated promotes a 35 percent affirmative action for women, stipulating a 35 percent involvement of women in governance processes.
