1. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:
Accountancy Department is one of the pioneer departments that commenced upon the establishment of the institution as the College of Technology, Owerri by the then Government of Imo State in 1978. At a point in time the department was merged with the Department of Banking and Finance into the Department of Financial Studies having options for:-
Accountancy and Banking and Finance.
This arrangement was short-lived as the status quo was restored and the Department returned to operation as independent departments in the School of Business And Management Technology. Currently the school has the following academic departments:
Accountancy;
Banking and Finance;
Business and Management Administration;
Co-operative Economics and Management;
Marketing;
Office Technology Management;
Public Administration;
Purchasing and Supply; and
Taxation.
2. VISION STATEMENT:
The vision of the Department is to remain a pacesetter in education and training of practitioners in accountancy profession.

3. OBJECTIVES
The department has the objective of organizing, teaching and conducting research studies leading to the award of Ordinary National Diploma (OND) andHigherNational Diploma(HND). The programmes are fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education(NBTE) as well as the relevant professional bodies:
The objectives of the National Diploma (ND) programme are as follows:
To transmit a body of knowledge that will enhance command Of adequate technical skills and improve business techniques.
To increase the student’s capability to learn, analyze, interpret and communicate effectively with others.
To motivate the graduate understand himself and his environment as well as the community in which he lives.
The objectives of the Higher National Diploma (HND) programme are as follows:
To transmit at a higher level body of knowledge and a command of adequate management skills and techniques.
To produce graduates who are capable of managing organizations resources and communicating effectively.
To assist the graduates of this programme have a good understanding of their environment and the community both local and international where businesses operate.
To inculcate into the graduates the ethical social responsibilities of an accountant.

6. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department enrolls students intothe following Morning/Evening/Weekend Programmes accredited for Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND):
Requirements for the National Diploma (ND) programme are as follows:
Possession of West African Senior Certificate or General Certificate Examination (GCE) Ordinary Level or its equivalents National Examination Council (NECO), National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB), etc. with five credit passes at not more than two sittings. The passes should include English Language, Mathematics and any other three subjects from the following: Literature-in-English, Economics, Geography, Commerce, Principles of Accounts, Government, Statistics, Office practice, and one science subject.
All candidates for admission are expected to present their certificates for screening on arrival prior to joining the class.
The general entry requirements for admission into Higher National Diploma (HND) programme shall be as follows:
All requirement for admission into ND Accountancy/Financial Studies programme, plus
A minimum of Lower credit pass (CGPA 2.50 and above) in the ND Accountancy programme result and
A minimum of one year post ND cognate industrial work experience.
In exceptional cases ND graduates with a pass (CGPA2.00-2.49) that have completed two or more years cognate industrial work experience may be considered for admission into the Higher National Diploma (HND) Accountancy programme.

HOD’s PROFILE
Mrs Oparah Vivian Ihuaku is a Lecturer at Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri, IMO State. She has taught students at various levels for over fifteen years. She is a financial expert and analyst.
Mrs Oparah Vivian Ihuaku was born in the year July 22nd 1973. A chartered Accountant with a season’s worth of experience.
She is currently undergoing her Ph.D. degree program in Accounting at Imo State University.
Management accounting, financial management, and cost accounting are her primary fields of expertise.She have authored numerous papers that have appeared in both national and international publications.
She has served in many committees in the school of business and management technology and in the department (Accountancy) and was of recent appointed the Acting Head of Department.
