HISTORY   OF   THE   DEPARTMENT   OF   BUSINESS   ADMINISTRATION   AND MANAGEMENT (BAM)

The Department of Business Administration and Management was one of the maiden departments with which the Federal Polytechnic Nekede (then College of Technology) took off in November 1978 at its temporary site along Egbu Road Owerri and which prior to this time housed the Imo State Government Trade Center (now Government Technical College). The department then started as Department of Business Administration and Transport Studies with an initial student's enrollment of 70 (seventy) and two lecturers. It opened its doors for lectures in the 1979/80 academic sessions and like any other department; it had the two-tier system of ND and HND the first maiden graduates of ND and HND students under the transitional programmed were 1982 and the second batch in 1983 the Transport study was later discontinued and the changed to Department of business and public Administration.

Since its inception in 1979, the department has continued to grow and develop in the essential areas namely, staff, students, infrastructure academic performance. While the Department of public Administration which now offers both ND and HND programme was created from Business Administration and Management (BAM).

To date, BAM department has graduated men and women who have become captains of industry and commerce and have had fulfilled careers both in the public and private sectors of the economy and beyond where they have made (and are still making) significant contribute1 s which impact the lives of many in no small measure. The programme has helped immensely to bridge the gap in managerial manpower requirements.

HISTORY OF PERSONNEL

The first HOD was late Mr. Ajeroh and was succeeded by Dr. S.C.K Adiele. Others that headed the department include Dr. B.S. Duru, Mr. A. U Ohiri, Late F.C. Uzoechi, Late C.N Agu, Dr. C.V Njoku, Mr. D.C Ohadinma, Sir. A. U Ohiri, Dr. Iwueke Obinna C., Mr. Ugiagbe Maxwell, and currently Mr. Oparaku Udoka.

The department has Two Chief Lecturers, Two Senior Lecturers, Four Lecturer I, Two Lecturer II, Seven Lecturer III, Two Assistant Lecturers, Four Principal Technologist, and Nine Technologist II, making total Thirty Two (32) Staff members. The department also has an Assistant Confidential Secretary, a Clerk and Screening Officers.


 

GENERAL PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

The programme was set up fundamentally to ensure that our students acquire profound theoretical and practical knowledge. This facilitates self-reliance, competence, excellence and high integrity. To this end, emphasis is on continuous articulation and provision of sound relevant broad knowledge about organizations and management in a dynamic environment.

A major objective of our diploma programmes is to educate and train would be managers by ensuring that they are equipped with requisite skills, knowledge and abilities that would enable them compete favourably and contribute efficiently in any organization they may find themselves.

Thus Business Administration and Management department strives to produce efficient managers that will contribute quality management to organizational development and growth. By ensuring that their skills are galvanized in utilizing various resources available within and outside the organizations.

The acquired skills will enable students of management to identify and define problems, take appropriate decisions using various management tools, design management strategies and conduct structural analysis on any aspect of business.

Finally, the department aims to prepare students for self employment and careers in business and general management. The above objectives which are not fixed are revisited whenever there is need to meet with dynamism of the environemt. Based on these objectives the academic contents of this programme is designed.

BAM 111 - INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS 1. CREDIT UNIT 3

The framework of Business. The types of Business organizations and ownership. Basic organization structure. The functional activities of business. Business in the society. The role of International organizations in business. The Small scale industries and their impact on the Nigerian economy.

BAM 112 - BUSINESS MATHEMATICS. CREDIT UNIT 3

The concept of Simple and Compound Interest, annuity, present value and discount. Investment appraisal. Necessary test and their application to business. Evaluate indices. The concepts of equations and inequalities and their applications in solving business problems. Vector algebra and its application business. Comprehend the basic idea of matrix and its application to business. The construction and interpretation of graphs and their application.

BAM 113 - PRINCIPLES OF LAW. CREDIT UNIT 2

The composition of legal system in Nigeria, the rudiments of the Nigerian constitutional law concepts and the separation of powers in the constitution, the nature and sources of Nigerian law, the law of the person and of association, the law of administration of estates and trusts, the law of property, the rudiments of the law of contract, and the law of tort in business.

BAM 114 - PRINCIPLES OF ECONOMICS 1 CREDIT UNIT 2

The scope of economics, the price theory, the theory of production, and the factors affecting the location and regulation of industries.

BAM 211 - INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS 11. CREDIT UNIT 3

The basic principles of management, the various sources of financing business, the roles of human resources department in business organizations, the basic functions of marketing in business practice, the various production processes in business, and the different types of business risks and uncertainties.

BAM 125-DATA PROCESSING 1 (INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY). CREDIT UNIT 3

Introduction to ICT, the computer operating systems and software, the principles and methods of data processing, the principles of data management, the principles of data communication and application, and the operation of office packages (MS word processing applications).

BAM 124 - PRINCIPLES OF ECONOMICS 11 CREDIT UNIT 2

The concept of money, financial institution, and their role in the economy. National Income and its significance in the economy, the theory of international trade, the concept of economic development, and the basic principles of public finance.


BAM 123 - INTRO TO SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY. CREDIT UNIT 2

The basis of human behavior, the developments of behavior, the principles of personality development, the processes of learning, the human emotions, the processes of attitude formation and change, and the psychological effects of health.

BAM 126 - INTRO TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP. CREDIT UNIT 3

The basic concept of entreneurship, the roles of entrepreneurship in personal and national growth and development, how to set business goals, how to identify business opportunities, and how to draw business plan.

BAM 117- BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT RELATION. CREDIT UNIT 2

The knowledge of Government and Business relation to business situation. The concept of government power, models and application. The rudiments of legal framework, composition of intellectual properties.


BAM 127- INTRODUCTION TO LABOUR RELATION CREDIT UNIT 3 

The course is intended to expose student to the fundamental and current issues in labour management relation and also serve as a preparing course to a more broader study in industrial relation.

BAM 212 - BUSINESS STATISTICS 1. CREDIT UNIT 3

The nature of statistical data and their importance, the problems of collection of statistical data, the basic sampling methods, the organization of statistical data, the analysis of statistical data, the elementary concepts of probability distributions, and the uses of regression and correlation analysis.

BAM 211 - PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT. CREDIT UNIT 3

The nature and scope of management, the historical background of management, the responsibilities of a manager, the management function of Planning, the management function of organizing, the management function of co­ordinating, and the management function of controlling.


 

BAM 215 - DATA PROCESSING & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY II. CREDIT UNIT 3

The system concept, the various stages of system analysis, the system design, word processing packages and their application to business, spread sheet packages and effectively operate spreadsheet software, and how to produce a hardcopy output.

BAM 216 - PRACTICE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP. CREDIT UNIT 3

The roles of entrepreneurship in the development of the Economy, the levels of aspiration, perseverance and personal efficacy of an entrepreneur, the various existing industry and support agencies in Nigeria, the functions of Management and the roles of a manager in an enterprise, the strategies for consolidation and expansion of business enterprises, and the practical aspect of running a business.

BAM 221 - PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT. CREDIT UNIT 3

The principles of personnel management, the structures of organization, the concept of delegation, the concept of leadership, the management functions of motivation, and the importance of effective communication in an organization.

BAM 222 - BUSINESS STATISTICS 11. CREDIT UNIT 3

The survey planning and designs, the sampling theory, the inferential statistics, the Binaries Distribution, the Point and Interval Estimates, the Mathematics Expectations, the moments generating functions' (GMF), the tests of linear regressions, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and the measures of welfare.

BAM 223 - ELEMENTS OF PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT. CREDIT UNIT 3

The role and functions of production management, the use of simple mathematical models in production management, the basic strategic functions of production management, the broad functions of production planning and control, the need for quality control measures in production management, the linear programming in production scheduling, the need for proper maintenance of facilities in production management, and the social responsibility of the production system.

BAM 223 - ELEMENTS OF HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT. CREDIT UNIT 3

The concept and scope of Human Capital Management, the functions of the Human Capital Management Department in an organization, the role of trade unions in personnel policies and Human Capital Management Practices in an Organization, procedures for handling conflicts in an organization, and motivation

BAM 213 - OFFICE MANAGEMENT. CREDIT UNIT 2

The organization of an office, the factors affecting location of an office, the physical conditions essential for an office, staff Administration, the office procedure, the use of different types of office machines and equipment, office records management, the purpose and importance of communication.

BAM 214-BUSINESS LAW. CREDIT UNIT 2

The law of contract, sale of goods, etc., the law as it relates to supply of labour, goods and services, the Law of Agency, the Law of Partnership, the Law of Insurance, the Negotiable instruments, the Law of Hire Purchase, and the Law of Common Carriage.


BAM 226-  INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT CREDIT UNIT 2

The basic knowledge in project management in various spheres to business. The nature and features of project, understand project organization, project planning, controlling, co-ordination, appraisal and sickness and causes.

BAM 311 - PRACTICE OF MANAGEMENT Credit Unit 3

The organizing skills, the planning skills, the forecasting skills, the control skills, the decision making skills, the use of objectives, the use of policy, and the leadership skills.

BAM 312-ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR 1. Credit Unit: 2

The concept and process of organizational behavior, the social perception of people, the people and personality, motivation and incentives, work groups and structure, the communication in organizational behavior, the group as a team (group dynamic).

BAM 313 - QUANTITATIVE TECHNIQUES 1 Credit Unit: 3

The development and role of Quantitative Techniques (QT) in Business, the Matrix Algebra, the Linear Programming Model, the Quality Control, the Network Analysis, the Query Models, the time series Analysis, and the Capital Investment Appraisal.


BAM 316- ADMINISTRATIVE THEORY AND PRACTICE CREDIT UNIT 3 

The course is intended to give the student a good foundation in the administration science. It becomes necessary for them to marry administrative and management theories together.

BAM 321 - MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM Credit Unit 2

The concept of MIS, the development cycle of MIS and total system , the principles of decision-making, the computer report, the Data Base Management System, the DBMS case study.

BAM 322-ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR 11. Credit Unit: 2

The roles and conflicts, change and management of change, power and control, status, the role of a leader, and leader as manager.

BAM 323 - MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT Credit Unit: 2

The Nature, Concept and values of Development, the processes and strategies of National Development, the indicators and indices of national development, the concept of sustainable Human Development, the national development agenda, the problem of national development in Nigeria, and the roles of business in national development.

BAM 324 - HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT II. Credit Hours: 3

The use of job interview, the procedure for selection decision - making, the medical check in selection procedure, the use of employment reference, induction procedure, employee performance appraisal, training and development, compensation administration, and employee discipline procedures

BAM 325 - PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT. Credit Unit 3

The concept, meaning and nature of production management, the objectives and problems of Inventory management, the importance of work study and work measurement in production control, the applications of work analysis in production management, the role of purchasing in production, the meaning and methods of production planning and application, the application of transportation and assigned models, the need for and methods of quality control in production management.

BAM 327 - RESEARCH METHODS. Credit Unit 2

Research and its process, scientific approach to research, how to design research, research problem, formulation and validation of hypothesis, variables in research work, sample and sampling techniques, how to review literature, the tools and techniques of data collection, data analysis techniques, and how to report research findings.

BAM  329- CORPORATE GOVERNMENT CREDIT UNIT 2 

This course is intended to give the student a good insight into the way and manner corporations are governed. How the firms comply with the relevant regulations, the effectiveness of internal control (Measures, transparency and reliability).

BAM 411 - BUSINESS POLICY AND STRATEGY 1. Credit Hours: 3

The nature of policy and strategy in business, the concept of social responsibility, the dynamics of the business environment, the ways of assessing the company's strengths and weaknesses, how to state the company's strategy, the impact of personal values in strategy values, and business ethic.


BAM 412 - MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS I. Credit Unit: 3

The nature and scope of managerial economics, the theory of the firm, demand theory, production theory, and cost theory


BAM 417- COMPARATIVE MANAGEMENT CREDIT UNIT 2 

The course is intended to enable student acquire skills, knowledge and abilities in comparative management. Understand the concepts and process, culture and cross cultural management, diversity of work force and management implication.

 

BAM 418 0- SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT CREDIT UNIT 3 

To provide the student with the basic knowledge on the various tools used in the management of small scale business.


BAM 429- ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN CREDIT UNIT 2 

The course is designed to enable the student to identify the elements of structure that are involved in increasing productivity, reducing costs and enhancing the organization chances of survival within its dynamics, complex and ever changing  environment.


BAM 413- ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT CREDIT UNIT 3 

This course is intended to create awareness in a student and motivate him towards self employment through the development of personal skills, competencies effectiveness and aptitudes using project based work in an economic setting to set up and manage a small and medium enterprises successful.
