1. Brief History of the Department
The Humanities Department started first as one of the Departments in the School of General Studies in the Polytechnic which then was made up of three departments as follows: Social Sciences, Maths/Statistics and Humanities. The department dates back as far as the Polytechnic itself which started in 1978. This is because it is one of the departments that started with the Polytechnic when it was called College of Technology, Owerri, then situated at Government Technical College (GTC) Owerri with an initial intake of Two hundred and Fifty (250) students which later moved to its present site at Nekede in October 1980. The School of General Studies was later renamed in 2002 by Engr. Onyekwere Nwankwo, the then Rector, as the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In the 90s, the Department of Humanities was running an in-service certificate/advanced certificate courses in Mass Communication where all the radio, television and newspaper crew were involved in. It was from there that the Mass Communication Department was eventually carved out.
The department is made up of three disciplines thus: English, French and Igbo. The department services other departments in the Polytechnic.
