BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SURVEYING AND GEOINFORMATICS
The department of Surveying and Geoinformatics was one of the courses mounted at the commencement of the then College of Technology in 1978. National Diploma Programme in Surveying was mounted in 1978/79 Session. The National Diploma Programme was successful in initial accreditation which took place in 1985. However, the Department suspended the running of the HND programme in 1986 due to lack of essential instruments and equipment. The National Diploma programme faced re-accreditation in 1995which was successful. The Department received approval from NBTE to commence HND programme in Surveying and Geoinformatics from the 2008/2009 academic session.
The Department was headed by Surv. T.C. Eze from 1978 to 1984 with the first Students in take in October, 1978. From 1984 to 1988 the Department was headed by Surv. R.E. Ubajekwe he handed over to Surv. C.I. Nwabuchie who headed from 1988 to 1991. Surv. E.I. Chimezie took over from 1995 to 1998 and handed to Surv. E.I. Nwakwasi, who piloted the affairs of department from 1999 to 2002. Again, Surv. Chimezie headed from 2002 to 2006 and handed to Surv. D.I. Ijioma for 2006 to 2010. Surv. E.I. Nwakwasi was reappointed as the head of Department from 2010 to 2014 and he handed over to Surv. D.I. Ijioma, who was headed the department until his demise in 2017. Surv. Chukwu Fidelis was appointed to overseas the affairs of the department after the demise of Surv. D.I. Ijioma. Surv. Chukwu was appoint to head the department from 2018-2020. He handed over to Surv. (Mrs.) Asogwa Vivian who is now the current and first female head of department since the inception of the department of surveying and Geoinformatics, Federal Polytechnic Nekede.
The Department runs the ND and HND programmes in Surveying and Geoinformatics. The Department is well recognized in Nigeria and other parts of the world as a centre of training very good prospective Surveyors. A phenomenal change in name from Surveying to Surveying and Geoinformatics occurred in 2004 in line with Global Trend.
It is the glory of the Department that several of our Diplomats are occupying positions of responsibility in their career.
PHILOSOPHY
Surveying and Geoinformatics is an applied science course. There is no meaningful and sustainable development on the surface of the earth which can take place without the production of suitable maps, plans and charts by the Surveyor. The surface of the earth includes the air, the land and water.
The philosophy of the Department is to produce young men and women who are able to determine positions of points and features as accurately as required on the surface of the earth.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME (ND AND HND)
The aim and objectives of the ND and HND programmes include for
