HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department was originally running two programmes, Nutrition and Dietetics and Catering and Hotel Management until 1982/83 session.
At the instance of the Department and the students’ demand, the Academic Board decided to suspend Nutrition and Dietetics and introduced Food Technology in the 1983/84 academic session. Following accreditation visitation in 1985, the Food Technology programme was suspended.
Following a resource visitation by NBTE in the 1990, the Department received approval to mount Food Technology programme at the National Diploma level. It received full accreditation in 1992 and re-accreditation effective 2002.
For the Higher National Diploma, the Food Technology programme underwent initial Accreditation visitation from 17th to 21st July, 2006. The NBTE approved the initial Accreditation for a period of five years with effect from 1st October, 2006. There was accreditation for the both levels (ND and HND) levels in 2013. The department was granted full accreditation having three streams for the ND and two streams for the HND levels in November 2018. The Food Technology Department is very active, productive with proficient staff and responsive and obedient students. The Department, through their bakery section, generates revenue for the Institution and will eventually go commercial.
Food Technology Department, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri has the capacity to be regarded as the center of Food Science and Technology in Nigeria, with the quality and qualified lecturers and technologists, well-equipped laboratories and a large processing workshop.
