Environmental Biology by Definition is a program that focuses on the scientific study of the origins, functions, relationships, interactions, and natural history of living populations, communities, species, and ecosystems in relation to dynamic environmental processes. Environmental biologists study specific regional environments as well as the organisms and wildlife that inhabit those locations. These professionals aid in the protection and survival of wildlife within any given ecosystem, and they assess the impact of human activity on the environment. 

Environmental Biology Department is one of the departments in the school of Industrial and Applied Sciences (S.I.A.S), Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri Imo-State. The department was carved out from Biology/Microbiology with resource accreditation by NBTE in October, 2008 under our amiable and academic cordinator- Miss Nneoma Eleke who ran the affairs of the department until the pioneer Head of Department (HOD) Mr Gaye Andrew was appointed. Subsequent HOD’s include Mrs Pepertua Peter-Ogu, Mr Agaptus Ozurumba and presently Sct (Mrs) Uloma Nwaehiri. The department has produced several students with distinction and upper credit and has experienced continuous increase in students population since her inception.

Vision statement for Environmental Biology: To be the limelight department in educating scholars morally and academically and also bringing man to full acquaintance with the biotic and abiotic factors of his environment.

Mission statement: To nurture and sustain environmental ethics for global credibility.

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT’S STATEMENT AND PROFILE

It is the desire of the HOD to inculcate good morals and ethics on the students and sustain high academic standard through discipline, field works and practical, continual research, technological advancement and skills that will enable them to become entrepreneurs and help to maintain environmental friendliness.

Sct (Mrs) Uloma Linda Nwaehiri is a Principal Lecturer, a native of Okpala in Ngor-Okpala L.G.A. and married to Amainyi-ukwu in Ihitte Uboma L.G.A all in Imo State, Nigeria. She obtained her ND/HND (in Science Tech, specialty: Biology/Microbiology) from Federal Polytechnic Nekede, BMLS (Parasitology) from University of Port Harcourt, PGD (Microbiology) and MSc (Medical Microbiology) from Imo State University and currently Ph.D in view. She is an active researcher with several publications in reputable local and international journals in areas of bioremediation, environmental biology, micro organisms and sensitivity. She is a member of many professional bodies which include Nigerian Society for Microbiology (NSM), Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), and Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN). Mrs, Nwaehiri has written some textbooks in the area of Parasitology, Plant and Animal Taxonomy, Introduction to Microbiology, Pathology and so on.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT 

  1. The programme is designed to assist students understand the vital areas of Environmental Biology through structured lectures, tutorials and practicals. 

  2. To equip students with the basic skills that will enable them contribute positively to the society especially with respect to environmental control.

  3. To enable the students become innovative, self-dependent and entrepreneurs capable of reconciling the problems of man and his environment.

  4. To teach the students the need for conservation and recycling. 

  5. To prepare students for the pursuit of various careers in private and public environmental agencies.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

To be admitted into the two- year National Diploma(ND) Programme in Science Laboratory Technology (Environmental Biology Option, the candidate, in addition to an acceptable pass in UTME and post UTME examinations (combinations:  Biology, Chemistry, English and Physics/Mathematics), must have either of the following:

WAEC/NECO/GCE Senior Secondary School Certificate with credit passes in (5) five subjects; English language, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Physics at not more than two (2) sittings.

For a 2 year HND Programme in Environmental Biology, candidates with complete ND statement of result in Science Laboratory Technology (at least lower credit pass) in addition to the entry requirements as stated above are eligible for admission. 

KEY OFFICERS AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES

The Head of Department runs the affairs of the department with assistance of the following persons

  • Departmental secretary

  • Project/seminar coordinators

  • Four Course Advisers, each respectively for:

  1. ND 1

  2. ND 2

  3. HND 1

  4. HND 2




QUALIFICATIONS OBTAINABLE

(i)        National Diploma (ND) in Science Laboratory Technology.

(ii)       Higher National Diploma (HND) in Science Laboratory Technology (Environmental Biology Option).

SKILLS AQUIRED

Students that graduate from Environmental Biology Department are skilled in the following areas:

  1. Environmental impact assessment

  2. Monitoring of pollution and control

  3. Conservation and recycling

  4. Silviculture and horticulture

  5. Ability to be innovative in Environmental Biology


JOB/EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of Environmental Biology are expected to be useful in oil and gas sector, Environmental Ministries, Silvicultural centers and other related Industries.  Their expertise would be required as Environmentalist, Monitoring and control officers. The graduates would also be able to establish themselves as private entrepreneurs.

  • Nigerian Environmental Society (NES)

  • Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT)
