BRIEF HISTORY OF BANKING AND FINANCE DEPARTMENT
The Polytechnic was established in 1978 as a College of Technology by the Old Imo State Government. The Department of Banking and Finance at inception was part of the Department of Accountancy until 1991 when it became autonomous with Sir C.M Anyaogu as the pioneer Head of Department (HOD). The Department since it became autonomous has had many Heads of Department which include:

To be the best and fastest growing department among the departments in the School of Business and Management Technology in particular and the entire Polytechnic in the areas of staff and students.
OUR VISIONING PROCESS
To develop into a world class center of excellence for learning and research based training programmes in Banking & Finance for the purpose of enhancing the growth and development of Nigeria economy in particular and African Economy in general.
The visioning process is being influenced by several factors including the leadership of the institution, country trends and the character and emerging dynamism of the students and lecturers and economic situation in the country. From that, the following strategic choices along the following dimension were agreed on to guide the department.
1 Vision Time Frame-5 years, 2 years ND program, I yr I.T and 2 years HND.
2 Practical contents shall include field work and operations within the departmental demonstration banks and outside
3 Seminars/ departmental organized workshops etc.
PHILOSOPHY
The programme is designed within a theoretical and practical framework to include knowledge and skill in finance and banking in order to solve our national and global financial system problems. To achieve this the department utilizes the highly trained, qualified and motivated academics and professional staff. Invariably cutting the technological barriers to produce banking & Finance Technocrats who should be self-reliant and possess the required technical and technological potentials to compete favorably and function effectively and integrate into the world economic and financial order, Thereby meeting the challenges of national and international development now and beyond.
(b) AIMS AND OBJECTIVE
The general aim and objectives of the programme include:
Produce graduates competent to drive and transform Nigerian Banking system into African’s major financial center.
Produce graduates with sufficient knowledge, skills and attitude for application in both private and public sectors for sound Banking and Finance Management.
Produce professional graduates capable of holding leadership position in public and private establishments relating to good governance in all financing and banking matters
Produce graduates with entrepreneurial skill needed to create, transform and sustain economic growth as well as increasing our relative market size to the extent that the country becomes the financial hub in Africa.
The objectives of ND and HND Banking and finance according to NBTE (2004) include:

The goal of the National Diploma ND programme in banking and Finance is to produce intermediate technical manpower with sound theoretical and practical knowledge who can effectively perform a range of various functions in banks and other financial institutions , commerce, industry, private and public enterprises.
The Objectives of the ND Banking and Finance programme
The graduates of the ND Banking and Finance should be able to:
Collect and integrate basic financial data for use in investment decisions.
Assist in the preparation of final accounts of companies and other financial organizations.
Assist in the preparation of short and long term budgets.
Collect and collate relevant financial information to aid superior officers/ and management decisions.
Compute basic financial and statistical ratios.
Assist in the analysis and evaluation of investment proposals, price and market trends.
The Goal of The HND Programme in Banking Finance.
The HND Programme in banking and Finance is designed to produce graduates with a comprehensive knowledge and thorough understanding of Business and Financial institutions. This should place the graduate in a Management position in the Banking and Finance industry. The HND programme should contribute adequately to the production of good quality, honest and dedicated management manpower for Banks, Financial institutions, Commerce, Industry, private and public enterprise.
OBJECTIVES OF THE HND IN BANKING AND FINANCE
The Graduate of the HND Banking and Finance programme should be able to:
Analyze and criticize final accounts of firms, especially as an aid to lending
Conduct search and perfect all security documents submitted by borrowing customers
Interpret basic statistical data (price changes, interest and Foreign Exchange rates, etc.)
Calculate, interpret and apply the Net present Value and internal Rate of Returns and other investment criteria
Prepare short and long term budget plans such as: cash budget and pro forma balance sheet etc.
Forecast market trends so as to determine profitability, viability etc.
Evaluate and manage investment portfolio
Analyze investment proposals
Analyze and evaluate financial assets for investment purposes.
C ENTRY REQUIREMENT
Our entry requirements are as given hereunder:

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) - 2 YEARS
General Entry Requirements
Candidates must hold the minimum entry requirement for NDprogramme in the specified field.
They must possess the National Diploma of the Federal polytechnic Nekede, Owerri or equivalent from recognized institution in the appropriate discipline with minimum of lower credit pass ( CGPA 2.50)
Candidates with pre-ND from other institutions must have a minimum CGPA of 2.75 at ND level
For candidates with pass level and CGPA below 2.00 points, a a minimum of two years post ND cognate working experience is required. (Applicable to Federal Polytechnic Nekede (ND) graduates only).
d. SCOPE / COURSES
The Department runs a two year programme for National Diploma and another two year programme for Higher National Diploma after a full one year industrial Training. Courses involved in the respective programmes include
