The Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede Owerri.
What is today known as Federal Polytechnic Nekede was established in 1978 by Edit No. 16 of the then Imo State Government, enacted by the Col, Sunday Adenihu Administration, It was then known as College of Technology (COTECH), Owerri. It started with the Head known as “Principal” in its temporary site, Government Technical College Owerri.
Functions of the Council
The functions of Councils in the Federal Polytechnics included but not limited to:
Governance
The Council shall be the governing body of the Polytechnic concerned and shall have the general management of the affairs of the Polytechnic, in control of property and finances.
Asset Ownership
It may acquire and hold movable and immovable property.
Contractual Authority
It may enter into contracts.
Rector Appointment
It recommends to Mr President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria some candidates, out of which he appoints one as Rector.
Key Appointments
It appoints the Deputy Rector(s), the Registrar, the Bursar, and the Polytechnic Librarian.
Role of the Council
The Governing Council serves as the supreme administrative body of the Polytechnic, overseeing the general management, direction, and strategic policies of the institution in line with national education objectives.
Responsibilities
Key functions include property and financial management, contract approvals, appointment of key officers, and making recommendations to the President for the position of Rector, ensuring the Polytechnic's growth and sustainability.
